AN/FPS-7 Long-Range Search Radar

The AN/FPS-7 radar system was one of the first stacked-beam systems to combine both the search and the heightfinding capabilities. The radar was deployed in late 1959 and the early 1960s to replace the AN/CPS-6. The first set began operating at Highlands, New Jersey, in 1959, and was used for both air defense and air traffic control. Named the “Highlands Air Force Station”, this base became a U.S. Air Force installation around 1948 and was operated by the 646th Air Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron from March 1951 to July 1966. In the early 1960s a modification called AN/ECP-91 was installed to improve its electronic countermeasure (ECM) capability. About thirty sets were produced. Another modification was the AN/FPS-107 which also operated in the L-Band which was manufactured by Westinghouse.
