Precision Approach Radar made by TESLA / Pardubice

History of the Czech radar technology

Experiments with development of the first military and later civilian airports radars started in 50´s. One of first surveillance radar was RL-1, which operated at Praha airport at the end of 50´s. The first combined radiolocation system was called RP2/RL-2 and operated as Precision Approach Radar and surveillance radar too. In the first half of 60´s, Tesla Pardubice started to produce the radar technology. There the most famous precision approach radars such as RP-3F, 3G, 4G and 5G were produced, which were specific for involved airports in Soviet Union, and for others countries too, such as Hungary, Romania and Korea.

These radiolocators fulfilled ICAO standards and could operate during hard meteorological conditions (strong wind, cold). Over 360 units of the series 3F to 5G were produced during 1966 to 1992. Some of these radars still operate on Russian, Ukrainian, Estonian or Romanian airports.

The surveillance radars were intended for operation mainly for Czechoslovakia/Czech army and for Czech airports too. Some of these radars of type RL-41, 42, 61 and 64 still work at some Czech airports.

Combined radiolocation systems were used mainly for military purposes. These include series such as RPL-2, RPL-4 and RPL-5. In 80´s and 90´s system type RPL-5E was exported to Russia and Ukraine.

After year 1994, the Tesla concern divides into smaller companies which continue in production or renovation of radar systems. These companies are:
