Merlin
The Merlin is a simultaneous operating in S- and X-Band dual scanning, solid-state aircraft birdstrike avoidance radar.
The radar should be located at mid-field on the primary runway. It uses two large rotating antennas - the S-Band antenna rotates horizontally and scans 360 degrees around the site. The second antenna is a wide-beam X-Band radar and rotates vertically (like a wind mill) and scans a hemisphere above the runway. Its antenna pattern extends either side of the runway centerline by 10 to 15 degrees and provides altitude measurement to 10,000 ft. Both radar parts provide a real time bird detection, tracking and alerting of hazardous bird activity at commercial airports and military airfields.
