TYPE 40

The TYPE 40 was an operating in X-Band storm warning radar, mainly for service in the tropics.

The antenna was a Double Cheese type, 4 ft wide with a vertical beam of 21 degrees. The upper horn and cheese reflector combination acted as the radiating element whilst the lower combination received the returned signals. The transmitter, receiver, modulator, and power units are located immediately under the antenna so rotating with it. The display is a 12 inch PPI-scope using a long persistence cathode-ray tube.

The screen could be combined with a television camera so that the radar image could be sent to remote users like a television film.
