SWR-503 (HFSWR)
The SWR-503, or HFSWR is an Over–The–Horizon Surface Wave (OTH SW) radar operating in HF-Band.
HFSWR provides simultaneous, all weather, coverage of ocean going vessels and aircraft throughout the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The radar consists of co-located transmit and receive sites and uses a floodlight beam on transmit to illuminate the surveillance area. The transmit antenna is a 7-element logarithmic-periodic monopole with a gain of 8 dB. The receive antenna is a linear array of 16 monopole doublets. The spacing between the radiating elements is 33 m. The radiated signal consists of a phase-coded pulse sequence. Directional information of the reflected target signal is obtained using a phased array antenna in association with digital beam synthesis.
Two SWR-503 HFSWR systems, manufactured by Raytheon Canada Ltd, have been operating on Canada’s East Coast since 1999.
