AWS-1
The AWS-1 was an operating on a single frequency in S-Band naval radar for surface warning and air and surface target indication. It was developed in 1956/57 amd was primarily designed for installation of destroyers, frigates and corvettes.
The AWS-1 antenna was a double curved parabolic reflector with a width of 16 feet and cosecant-squared antenna pattern. The feed of the antenna was only linearly polarized. The transmitter used a magnetron operating on a fixed frequency. The receiver was fitted with a klystron as local oscillator and was fitted with an automatic frequency control.
The antenna reflector was very successful and became a prime example for several other radars, from AR-1, AR-15 to Watchman.
AWS-2
AWS-2 is the sucessor of AWS-1 using the same antenna but with switcheable linear or circular polarization and a hydraulic stabilized against pitch and roll turntable. The transmitter used tuneable magnetrons in two frequency sub-bands (2.7 … 2.9 GHz and 2.9 … 3.1 GHz). The receiver used a parametric amplifier with a bandwidth of 15 MHz and digital moving target indication with double cancellation.
