P-70 Lena-M

The P-70 Lena-M (Russian designator: П-70 «Лена M») was an operating in VHF-Band fully coherent early warning radar. It was the first commercially available radar in the world using an intra pulse modulation. This radar was developed since 1958, and 11 radar sets were built in the period from 1960 to 1968.

The radar equipment was located in a two-story building covered with iron and equipped with hermetically sealed doors. On the roof of the building, the antenna was rotating on rubber rollers along rails. The reflector of the antenna had a size of 45 × 25 m. It provides two channels (high- and low-beam). Additional there were short-pulse and long-pulse channels operating simultaneously on one antenna with two polarizations. The maximum altitude of detection was 160 km.

The transmitted pulse of 50 µs was linear frequency modulated with a bandwidth of about 1 MHz. The compressed pulse length was 1 µs.
