RTN-20X “Orion”

The RTN-20X alias MM/SPG-74 (MM stands for Marina Militare, a nomenclature for the Italian Navy, similar to the US-Army/Navy's nomenclature AN/…) is an operating in J-Band fire-control radar specifically developed for close in weapon systems. It is derived from the RTN-10X.

The radar uses a monopulse, cassegrain antenna with a polarisation twist and employs a fully coherent chain transmitter using a traveling wave tube as the final amplifier. Two different pulse lengths can be selected, both at elevated repetition rates. The transmission frequency can be changed randomly, on a pulse-to-pulse or burst-to-burst basis, over a wide frequency spectrum. The fully digital receiver uses a multicanceller moving target indicator and is equipped with devices to minimise the effects of multipath on low-flying targets.

RTN-25X “Orion”

RTN-25X is an improved version of the RT-20X which uses the same antenna and transmission chain but with greater radiating power. The radar can be used with different fire control systems to direct guns firing at short and medium range. The radar also includes two electro-optical sensors (a high-resolution TV camera and an IR camera) for passive target tracking. As a third sensor, a laser range finder can also be installed.
